A Yard in the right direction.

Disabled children’s charity The Yard is to launch a new service for under-12’s in Dundee in conjunction with the Hush Club.

Safe environment

The Yard is an Edinburgh-based charity which operates purpose built indoor and outdoor adventure playgrounds for children and young people with disabilities.  It provides a safe environment where children and young people can experience play without feeling different.

The new centre, the first outside of Edinburgh, is part of The Yard’s plan to expand across Scotland over the next decade.  The temporary centre will open at 14 Drumlanrig Place in the autumn with the company hoping to secure permanent premises in the city over the next few years.

Huge step forward

Celine Sinclair, chief executive of The Yard, said:  “This feels like a huge step forward for us and couldn’t come at a better time.

“The Yard has been working on developing a programme of national expansion across Scotland for the last two years, and this marks the first stage in this move to make The Yard a national charity providing adventure play services for children and young people across Scotland.”

This feels like a huge step forward for us and couldn’t come at a better time.

Gill Thomson from the Hush Club said:  “We couldn’t be more excited by this news.

“We have been working towards this since we first met up with The Yard last year, it’s what is needed in Dundee and will make a huge difference to the lives of disabled children and their families.”

Much-needed service

Sara Lyttle, project coordinator of the under-12s club project, said: “We are very excited to be working alongside The Yard and Hush Club to bring this fantastic and much-needed service to Dundee.”

The expansion is being funded by the RS Macdonald Charitable Trust and The Yard also hopes to secure further temporary facilities in Fife this year.
