If the need for a wheelchair or mobility scooter is new to you or a family member, figuring out where to start can be a daunting task. Luckily the BHTA have published a comprehensive guide to help make things as easy as possible.
What is the BHTA?
The British Healthcare Trade Association works to help people live more independently, with over 500 member companies, that make or sell healthcare and assistive technology products.
Being a member of the BHTA means a company must follow the Code of Practice set out, this means those who require assistance get the right advice and guidance about the products designed to make life easier. Members of the BHTA are initially approved by the Consumer Codes Approval Scheme (CCSA), thereafter BHTA ensures the code is complied with.

NHS
The best place to start is the NHS, after being referred to your local NHS wheelchair service by your GP, you can discuss your individual needs and circumstances. An assessment may be done – if you meet the criteria and it is agreed you require a wheelchair they will then provide you with one, the NHS does not provide mobility scooters. You will then have the choice of using your Personal Wheelchair Budget or requesting a voucher to buy a wheelchair from your mobility retailer of choice.
Charities
If funding is an issue there are many charities out there who can help you and will have connections to a BHTA mobility retailer.
Finance
If you prefer the option of easy payments over an agreed amount of time, finance might be the preferred method of funding for you. You can find out more about Mobility Solutions finance options here.
