Improvements to Capability Scotland Units

Capability Scotland has recently been able to make some great improvements to its facilities. Corseford School, Stanmore House School and Wallace Court have all benefitted from the efforts of fundraisers as well as awards from national funds.

Capability Scotland works with disabled children and adults across Scotland, campaigning and providing education, employment and care services. The organisation runs 40 services which directly support around 1,000 disabled people from 29 of the 32 Scottish local authorities.

Awarded a Grant

After a public vote in November, the organisation was awarded a grant of £5,000 from the Bank of Scotland Community Fund. This has been split between Stanmore House School and Wallace Court.

£3,000 of the grant will be used to upgrade Stanmore House School’s hydrotherapy facilities. Modern changing facilities will be developed to improve the experience for users of the pool, including new cubicles, showers and adjustable changing beds. The remaining £2,000 will be used to create a sensory room for Wallace Court like the one which opened in Corseford School in November.

Immersive Learning Environment

The Corseford School sensory room was opened thanks to the joint fundraising efforts of staff, parents and carers and the Postcode Trust. The new theatre provides an immersive learning environment tailored to individual students’ needs and wishes. Using wind machines, projectors, fog machines and aroma panels, the students can choose from a wide range of sensory experiences.

Corseford Head of School, Fiona Catterson, said: “We are so grateful to everyone who has made our dream of having a sensory theatre at the school a reality. Thanks to the amazing efforts of our parents and staff and the generosity of the People’s Postcode Trust our pupils will be able to enjoy this fantastic equipment as part of the school curriculum. We are all thrilled.”
