A new report by the Independent Commission on Extra Costs has highlighted the problems faced by disabled people in acquiring a powered wheelchair.
Funding, Provision and Maintenance
The survey of over 300 people found that disabled people and their families often have difficulties finding relevant information on factors such as funding, provision and maintenance of powered wheelchairs.
The results show that most wheelchairs tend to be purchased privately or with charitable help and 32% of those surveyed had to fund their chair completely by themselves. 37% received no assessment before making a purchase and 48% felt that they didn’t get the right information.
Finding the Right One
Powered wheelchairs can help many disabled adults and children to be more independent and can help reduce the need for future medical interventions. However, with a huge range of models available finding the right one to suit individual needs is an understandably difficult task.
