Explore some of the key maintenance tips below to help you prepare your mobility scooter for winter storage.
Cleaning and Preparing
Make sure that you clean your mobility scooter thoroughly before storing it away for winter. Ensure that there is no dirt or moisture left on the scooter before storage, as this can cause severe damage to both the body and mechanical components.
Use a damp cloth and wipe down all surfaces, making sure to remove any grime or build up. Pay close attention to the wheels and areas where you find dust tends to gather.
Once you have cleaned the mobility scooter, make sure that you dry it completely, especially any metal parts to prevent rust or corrosion.
Storage
To protect your mobility scooter during the winter months, suitable storage is key. The ideal location should be dry, sheltered and protected from the elements. Places like a garage or shed can offer the best protection. Some waterproof covers may offer added protection but please check with the manufacturer that this will be adequate before using the cover as storage. Make sure that the cover fits properly and avoids keeping moisture inside.
Avoid storing your mobility scooter outdoors or in damp places where moisture can cause damage to your product.
Charge the Battery
It is crucial that you fully charge the battery on your mobility scooter before storage. This is important to maintain the lifespan of the battery. We also recommend that you charge your battery every few weeks during the winter or recharge fully if required. Batteries can suffer from long term inactivity, and it is vital you keep them in good condition over the winter period.
Top Tip – If you are storing your mobility scooter for an extended period, we recommend disconnecting the battery.
