A new app is being developed which could help disabled passengers travelling by train.
Emily Yates, a wheelchair user, who tested the app says, “I think anybody who is disabled will probably agree that you can have some pretty horrific travel journeys if you’re disabled.”
The app, which is being developed by Transreport, allows disabled train passengers to set up a profile which includes information like whether you need room for a guide dog, have a hearing impairment, need a ramp or require help buying your ticket.
You then plan your journey, which is sent directly to a rail assistance staff member who can then see your requirements and message you directly through the app. It can also track both the staff member and passenger via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS so no one is left hanging around.
Transreport is also hoping to address the issue of unmanned stations by helping plan journeys via the nearest accessible station. They are also making trackable wristbands and key fobs for those unable to use phones easily.
A full trial will be underway in the new year, with hopes of being live in UK stations by June 2018.
