Visit from Mobility Solutions South Africa

The Mobility Solutions team had the pleasure of welcoming Mike and Lorraine Petterson of Mobility Solutions South Africa to our Glasgow superstore today.

Same Name, Different Country

Lorraine, originally from Inverness and her husband Mike are based in Durban, South Africa and also operate under the name Mobility Solutions (the companies are not connected). On holiday visiting family for Christmas, Lorraine stated that they couldn’t resist visiting Mobility Solutions when in the area.

Established in 2008, Mobility Solutions SA specialise in 3 major areas; manufacturing, hospital, and mobility/rehab. They manufacture a wide range of products such as the B-Active Finger Stick that helps users to control devices such as their smartphones or tablets or for keyboard, made with the idea of helping anyone with quadriplegia or recovering stroke victims.

Mobility Solutions SA also supplies equipment to hospitals and surgeries, with products ranging from wheelchairs to theatre equipment.

Different Needs

They also supply products that are made with the South African climate in mind. Mike explained to us how the terrain in rural areas of South Africa simply doesn’t suit the traditional mobility scooter or mobility aids that are available in our Mobility Solutions store in Glasgow, so specialist products need to be manufactured. In addition, Mobility Solutions SA offer a beach wheelchair that allows users to enjoy the beach or swimming pool and even floats in the water. Unless a dramatic improvement in the Scottish summer weather takes place we don’t envisage this being a product that would be in high demand at either of our own stores!

Perhaps their most inspiring product and story is that of the B-Active Stand up Wheelchair, and the story of Dean Shand. This wheelchair allows users to go from seated to fully upright and to partake in activities they may have previously thought impossible, such as golfing and fishing. You can read more about Dean’s story here.

We very much enjoyed Mike and Lorraine’s visit and hope they have a fantastic Christmas in Scotland.
