A woman left paralysed after a car accident has created a trendy line of jeans specially designed for wheelchair users.
Particular challenge
Heidi McKenzie, 29, was determined to adapt to her new way of life after the accident, but discovered that finding a decent pair of jeans was a particular challenge. While there have been significant advancements in wheelchair technology and in including people with disabilities in major fashion shows, it became apparent to Heidi that designers were continuing to leave out wheelchair users from their fashion-forward creations.
It was only after competing in Ms. Wheelchair America that Heidi realised there were other likeminded women who faced the same fashion struggles she did. The consensus was that designs targeted towards the disabled community typically centred on functionality and were mostly aimed at a more ‘elderly’ market.
Feel comfortable
While it’s true that wheelchair users often need some special considerations when it comes to what they wear, Heidi was compelled to create her line of clothing because she knew how important it was for people like her to feel comfortable in their own skin. She teamed up with designer Kristin Alexandra Tidwell and launched Alter Ur Ego.
“I wholeheartedly believe I am exactly where I need to be — designing clothing for people like me in wheelchairs.”
Alter Ur Ego’s jeans are modelled after standard pairs, but have easily accessible pockets on the thighs and a tummy control panel, because “it’s impossible to suck in your gut,” McKenzie explained.
Kickstarter campaign
“I don’t dwell on the past nor would I want to change it,” McKenzie wrote in a recent blog post. “I wholeheartedly believe I am exactly where I need to be — designing clothing for people like me in wheelchairs.”
Heidi has launched a Kickstarter campaign with the hopes of raising $20,000 to get her project off the ground. The funds will go towards production costs and creating a portal to sell her product online.
